It's about finding a sense of rhythm through the piece as well as unity I guess. I am not all that experienced but I guess the really simple exercises are so that you can really speed through it so you can get that mileage in composition. I guess it is similar to how us animators try to do those really short gestures over and over and over again until we reach the point where we are able to have a feeling of rhythm in a figure and to tell a story through the pose.<br /><br />TL;DR<br /><br />I guess it may be that composition exercises are so simple that you have to do tons and tons of it to get a sense for it.
